THE FIRST CUMMINS POWERED LOCOMOTIVES IN ANGOLA EQUIPPED WITH CUMMINS QSK60-L

Darlington, UK (June 9, 2006) - Cummins announces order for the first two Cummins powered locomotives in Angola, Africa powered by QSK60-L rated at 1640 kW (2200 hp) at 1800 rpm. This is an important milestone for the Cummins Rail Group and opens up new opportunities for other countries in the region. The new locomotives are manufactured in Qingdao, China by SiFang Locomotive and Rolling Stock Company of the CSR group of companies. The design will be identical to SiFang's SDE16N locomotives which will also be supplied to Namibia.
The locomotives will be used on freight trains mainly carrying minerals, oil, cement and container traffic. These are intended for the route Luanda (the capital of Angola) to Malange with a 55 km branch line to Dondo which are situated in the north of the country and they will be operated by Caminhos de Ferro de Benguela. Steve Dodman, Locomotive Business Development Manager said "These new rail vehicles set a new benchmark for locomotives in Angola and we have confidence in further orders. This success follows on from last year's installation of QSK45-L engine in Namibia's first Cummins-powered Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) passenger train as well as the installation of QSK60-L engines in four locomotives for the country. These new locomotives are part of Namibia's Northern Railway Extension Project that will provide a vital inland trade corridor which will eventually link Walvis Bay to Windhoek as well as South Africa in the south to Angola in the north.
The new generation QSK60-L combines the proven durability of the Cummins QSK Series making it the right choice for the most arduous rail applications incorporating Cummins latest combustion and power cylinder technology.
The 60-litre engine platform is a recognized mining industry standard with over 4,250 engines in-service which means increased confidence for locomotive manufacturers. Cummins advanced in cylinder combustion and power cylinder technology enables the QSK60-L to meet the latest emission regulations. Engine sociability is further enhanced as the QSK60-L virtually eliminates visible smoke at all loads.
The QSK60-L utilizes a proprietary power cylinder design already proven on the more powerful QSK78-L engine. The FCD (Ferrous Cast Ductile) single-piece cast iron piston enables even expansion & contraction during thermal cycles, while piston cooling nozzles provide a high oil flow rate. This design virtually eliminates any risk of power cylinder failure before engine overhaul, together with the benefit of very low oil consumption.
QSK60-L power ratings extend from 1,492 kW (2000 hp) to 1865 kW (2,500 hp). Locomotive availability is enhanced for 24/7 operations by the factory fitted Eliminator™ oil filtration system and Centinel™ oil replacement system. Equipped with these options, QSK60-L oil service intervals can be dramatically extended while ensuring the best possible engine lubrication. They also offer a major reduction in used oil & filter disposal.
Cummins electronic architecture for Quantum engines features on the QSK60-L. The engine's electronic control module is fully isolated from any detrimental thermal or vibration loadings. A standard set of 37 sensors are located throughout the engine. The engine is also equipped with the Cense monitoring system which uses 16 exhaust gas temperature sensors to enable individual cylinder health monitoring. The operator can download and undertake trending analysis with datalogs of engine duty cycle, fuel consumption, load factors, fault snapshots and stop-starts. A progressive auto-derate feature is available as part of the engine protection system, triggered when pre-set threshold limits are exceeded.
