At Cummins, our 95 years of engineering expertise has enabled us to deliver a range of Euro 6 products with the optimum balance of performance and low emissions. We don’t stop there though, we are working with customers to tailor these engines in their installations for improved fuel efficiency, reduced CO2 emissions and lowest total cost of operation. This is SmartEfficiency, developing future-proof solutions that take Cummins and our customers beyond Euro 6.
Under this theme Cummins are announcing key product-line improvements that will include; optimised calibrations, stop-start capability, product tailoring with improved power and torque and other sustainable technologies. They are aligned to the 2017 Euro 6 OBD C requirements and will deliver genuine customer benefits through driveline efficiency improvements and reductions in operating costs.
The key change made at OBD C vs 2014 OBD A is to tighten the on-board diagnostics measurements to provide even closer control of compliance in service. This will add in-operation particulate monitoring for the first time, where previously only NOx was measured. The on-board monitoring of NOx will also be tightened.
Cummins met the 2014 Euro 6 OBD A through robust architecture with a long life, and this allows us to meet OBD C with no significant product updates needed. However, although electronic controls upgrades would be sufficient to do this, Cummins isn’t stopping there, and our engineers are working on a number of customer focused improvements to deliver more value with improved efficiency.
So, Cummins is redefining efficiency, with a range of solutions driving more efficient vehicle utilisation to support the focus on greenhouse gas emissions. It aligns with the company’s sustainability policy by encompassing both product design and product installation initiatives. We are constantly looking to develop smaller and lighter components. Our specialist engine expertise enables us to design integrated system solutions which optimise efficiency. We also provide strong integration support, partnering with OEMs to deliver installations tailored for efficient operation.
The first step for SmartEfficiency is tailoring engine calibrations, treating each application on its own merits. Cummins engineers have used their technical knowledge of the driveline system to extract the most out of the engine and related components. During recent bus tests working with OEM customers, revised calibrations have resulted in fuel efficiency savings of between 5 and 7%. The other SmartEfficiency solutions under development will increase this further.
