Houston, Tx. (May 3, 2004) - Cummins Inc. (NYSE:CMI) announced that its next generation QSK19 engine achieves Tier 3 engine emissions standards for the oil and gas market. The proven dependability of the 19-liter, 500 to 700 HP platform meets Tier 3 by incorporating new combustion technology and a common rail fuel injection system. This way Cummins is able to reduce emissions and maintain low installation costs. The Tier 3-compliant QSK19 maintains the same basic footprint as the existing engine and will be available in January 2005.

The common rail fuel system incorporated into the latest QSK19 is designed specifically for engines operating in rigorous high hour, high load factor applications. With the common rail system, maintaining peak injection pressure is not dependent on engine speed or fueling capability. Injection pressure can be virtually constant realizing greater flexibility and precision in controlling both injection rates and timing. Under low loads the availability of constant pressure means that high injection pressures can be maintained with a more effective fuel injection spray pattern. Correspondingly, the system also reacts more rapidly to sharp increases in load demands with smooth power delivery.
The common rail fuel system is fully integrated with an upgraded CM850 electronic control module (ECM) with double the processing speed as the ECM it replaces. The QSK19 continually maintains an optimum balance between load demands, fuel-efficiency, and emissions control.
The new CM850 ECM is designed for isolation from detrimental thermal and vibration loading. Fuel lines also incorporate double wall protection for added safety.
The OEM and operator interface with the engine management system is made easy using the latest QuickCheck™ III hand-held datalink providing instant diagnostics, fuel-efficiency data and multiple engine reports.
