Theory of Operation

The on-board Trip Information feature monitors, collects and stores a wealth of engine related operational information. This information can then be downloaded and organized into useful reports using Cummins PowerSpec. Trip Information, together with the appropriate reporting software, eliminates guesswork, providing clear, concise reports that are readily available to the user.

Operational data is recorded in two ways; non-resettable cumulative data which consists of running totals, and resettable trip data which consists of data collected only since the last trip reset.

Cumulative data recorded includes the following:

  • Total Engine Hours - Total engine run time for all ECM's operated on this engine. Prior ECM times must be entered by the user.
  • Total Fuel Used - Total fuel consumed as recorded by the ECM.
  • Total Engine Distance - Cumulative distance vehicle has traveled for all ECM's on this engine. User must enter prior distances.
  • Total PTO Time - Cumulative time the PTO has been engaged as recorded by this ECM.
  • Total PTO Fuel Used - Cumulative total fuel consumed while the PTO has been engaged as recorded by the ECM.
  • Total Idle Time - Cumulative total time the engine has been at idle speed as recorded by the ECM.
  • Total Idle Fuel - Cumulative total fuel consumed while the engine has been at idle as recorded by the ECM.
  • Total Cruise Control Time - Cumulative total time the cruise control feature has been activated as recorded by the ECM.
  • Total Engine Protection Shutdown Overrides - Cumulative total number of engine protection shutdown overrides as recorded by the ECM.
  • Total Max. Vehicle Vehicle Speed Time - Cumulative total time the engine has been at maximum vehicle speed as recorded by the ECM.
  • Total Top Gear Time - Cumulative total time the vehicle has been operated in top gear as recorded by the ECM.
  • Engine Average Load - Average percent load on the engine as recorded by the ECM.

Resettable data recorded includes the following:

  • Trip Drive Distance - Miles traveled in Drive condition since last trip information reset. Note: Drive Condition is defined as when vehicle is moving at a speed of greater than 1 MPH,engine speed is greater than zero and PTO is not operating.
  • Trip Drive Fuel Economy - Miles per gallon consumed in Drive condition since last trip information reset.
  • Trip Max. Vehicle Speed - Maximum vehicle speed recorded by the ECM since last trip information reset.
  • Trip Distance - Distance traveled by the engine since the last trip information reset.
  • Trip ECM Distance - Distance traveled by the ECM since the last trip information reset.
  • Trip Distance in Top Gear - Miles traveled with transmission in top gear since last trip information reset.
  • Trip Fan Time Engr System - Time the #1 fan has run due to high coolant temperatures, high intake manifold temperatures or engine brake demand since last trip information reset.
  • Trip Fan Time A/C System - Time the #1 fan has run due to A/C command since last trip information reset.
  • Trip Engine Brake Time - Time the engine brake has been active since the last trip information reset.

Keys to Success
Trip Information is a useful way to track engine performance and the driving habits of your operators. Remember that the information in the trip and vehicle logs must be reset on a regular basis to gain a better understanding of how the vehicle is being operated. Useful times to reset the logs are at the end of trips, changes in loading practices, and changes in operators.

Trip information can also aid in diagnosing vehicle performance issues. The data in the logs can be used as an incentive for operator improvement. Targets for fuel economy, time in top gear, time in cruise control, etc... can be established and used to measure the efficiency of each operator.

The use of an authorized Cummins' service or fleet management tool is required to reset the feature in order to ensure the validity of the data. This prevents accidental or even intentional erasure of the information that could be useful with regard to any incentives/penalties that you may implement.

The Trip Information feature relies on several components to provide accurate information. The vehicle speed sensor is essential to assure accurate recording of vehicle distances. If a vehicle speed sensor fails, information in the logs can be affected.

The electronic control module (ECM) is also imperative to the accuracy of the feature. If the engine requires the replacement of the electronic control module, all trip information data is lost. Trip Information is however equipped with the ability to offset the new ECM Engine Time and Distance parameters, and therefore assure that the cumulative time and distance values are correct. All other trip information will be accurate for the life of the new ECM, but not for the life of the vehicle.
