Darlington, UK (Apr 24, 2014) – Sales of Cummins engines into the European bus market reached the highest level to date in 2013, totalling over 6,500 units, 3,000 of these were supplied to Turkey for local and export use.

Ashley Watton, Bus Engine Sales Leader for Europe, said, "We achieved record sales of our bus engines to Europe in 2013. The UK remained our strongest market, however we saw increases from other areas, particularly Turkey.  Cummins has been supplying engines to Turkey for over 20 years, building a strong image for the brand. This has placed us in an excellent position to gain new business, supplying products to all of the major independent bus manufacturers in the region.”

“Cummins introduced our market leading SCR technology solution for Euro 4 in 2006. This opened the door for us to develop relationships with a number of OEMs including leading Turkish manufacturers Otokar and Temsa.  More recently we have also agreed to supply product to Andolu Isuzu, further increasing our presence in this market,” continued Watton.

Cummins’ ISBe engines are the leading choice for city bus applications across Europe.  The engines have built a reputation for efficiency and reliability up to Euro 5 emissions, and this is set to continue for Euro 6.  This reputation has supported OEM customers selling into both their local market as well as developing export opportunities.

“The competitive nature of the engine business means that we need to provide quality products and services that meet the market's needs.  The growth in our bus business over recent years means that we have been successful in doing this.  However we have not taken the growth for granted, and are continuing to invest.  Cummins’ engineers are working closely with our customers to support their move to Euro 6,” added Watton.

“Our Euro 6 technology choice provides the best solution for fuel economy, running costs and emissions across a range of passenger transport duty cycles.  This puts us in an ideal position to take advantage of new opportunities moving forward,” he concluded.
