Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CMI) – a leading manufacturer of diesel engines and generator sets for the marine industry – is pleased to return to the Monaco Yacht Show after a seven-year hiatus. This will be the first time the Company exhibits their full marine offering, including engines and generator sets, at the prestigious event.
Cummins Onan® marine generators have long had a strong reputation in the super yacht segment, and while Cummins large marine engines have enjoyed success in the commercial marine market, the engines are just recently being considered for larger recreational marine applications. Cummins large marine engines, from 19 liters to 60 liters, were designed to withstand the challenging conditions commercial operators often face. That same reliable, durable power – now up to 4,200 hp (3,132 kW) with the introduction of the QSK95 – is available for recreational boating applications.
With International Maritime Organization (IMO) Tier II-certified ratings from 3200 hp to 4200 hp (2386-3132 kW), the QSK95 provides 95 liters of displacement in a 78-liter package. Nested cylinders and a 60-degree V enable a short, narrow engine block relative to other engines of comparable displacement; in addition, the QSK95 weighs in just over 13,000 kg (28,660 lb).
As operators continue to seek better vessel maneuverability, the QSK95 delivers faster transient response through a unique turbo arrangement and a dry exhaust system. By using one turbo per four cylinders, the QSK95 is able to utilize a smaller turbocharger. The dry turbo housings and dry exhaust manifold maximize the available energy to the turbos, allowing them to spool up quickly, resulting in fast engine response.
Cummins design, validation and service teams devoted countless hours to ensuring that the QSK95 sets industry serviceability standards. From the early phases of engine design, qualified technicians participated in service tool and repair procedure validation, and design concepts were evaluated for progressive damage prevention. Initial feedback from technicians servicing QSK95 engines in the field has confirmed that the focus on serviceability will provide considerable payback over the life of the engines.
