Darlington, UK (March 28, 2011) - Production of Cummins renowned B Series passed 8 million units at the end of 2010. Since its introduction in the 1980’s the engine has grown into a truly global product, now manufactured in Brazil, China, India, Japan, Russia, Turkey, UK and the USA.

The significance of the B Series to Cummins is substantial, accounting for over 500,000 of the 900,000 total engines Cummins produced in 2010. The on-going forecast is expected to reach over 700,000 per year, reflecting a daily build rate of 2,800 units from manufacturing facilities around the world.
When launched in 1983, the “one litre per cylinder” B Series represented a significant new investment beyond the company’s traditional heavy duty truck engine business. This required over $1 billion. The engine was developed with a flexible design making it suitable for a wide variety of applications including truck, bus, construction, agriculture, marine, military and power generation. Originally available in a 6 cylinder 5.9 litre and 4 cylinder 3.9 litre configurations it enabled Cummins to forge partnerships with major vehicle and equipment manufacturers, many of which continue today.
Since its introduction, a number of design improvements have been incorporated into the B Series over the years to meet the ever increasing demands of Cummins customers as well as the stringent global emissions requirements.
“Cummins continued engineering development and investment in engine component technologies has kept the B Series at the top of its class. Given the popularity of this product it will not take long for us to reach 10 million," continued Pattison.
Significant changes required for Euro 3 emissions legislation in 2000 brought about the now well known ISBe name. The introduction of electronic engine controls allowed for much tighter control of the fuel system, continually maintaining an optimum balance between load demands, fuel-efficiency and emissions control. Engine monitoring and diagnostics capability also improved fleet management and servicing.
Mechanical fuel pumps were replaced by high pressure common rail fuel systems, delivering much more efficient combustion, faster response, improved cold start and reduced noise. At this time, the engine also moved to a rear gear train arrangement, reducing noise further.
More improvements were added as the ISBe moved to Euro 4 emissions in 2005. Engine displacement was increased from 5.9 to 6.7 litres and 3.9 to 4.5 litres, allowing for a 17% boost in torque and a 10% boost in power. This enabled them to be installed in applications traditionally associated with engines of higher displacement. The increase to 300ps gave the ISBe 6.7 engine the highest power-to-weight ratio in its class.
Cummins integrated strategy using the in-house Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system to meet Euro 4 drove improved fuel economy, longer service intervals and higher vehicle uptime along with the higher power and torque. Using SCR enabled the engine to easily move to Euro 5 with few changes and minimal installation impact for vehicle manufacturers.
“The Euro 5 version of the ISBe has now been developed as a worldwide platform. All of the product improvements introduced to date have been made available for customers needing Euro 2, Euro 3 or Euro 4 emissions, wherever the engine is produced,” added Pattison.
