Two new ultra-low emissions engines made their farming industry debut at Agritechnica
Cummins presented two new and innovative engines to the market at Agritechnica, Hanover Messe, Germany in November. The show is the world’s leading international exhibition for agricultural machinery and equipment. The advanced QSF3.8 and QSG12 (formerly QSM12) highlighted Cummins as a key partner in providing the best power solutions for demanding, durable and ultra-clean agricultural equipment.
Cummins displayed the new QSF3.8, ideal for all compact agricultural power and material handling. With ratings from 85–132 hp (63-98 kW), the QSF3.8 uses Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) combined with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) aftertreatment.
The QSF3.8 will continue the enviable reputation established by the popular Cummins QSB3.3 at Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB. Although larger in displacement and meeting more severe emissions standards, the QSF3.8 achieves fuel efficiency similar to that of the 3.3 liter engine. The 132 hp (98 kW) maximum power of the QSF3.8 exceeds that of the QSB3.3 to reach the highest output in the sub 4 liter engine class. QSF3.8 peak torque is equally impressive, at 360 lb-ft (488 Nm). A key design focus for the QSF3.8 was to minimize operating costs, with service-free features such as a crankcase ventilation breather requiring no filter element, reducing emissions and ensuring an exceptionally clean engine.
Joining the line-up was the new QSG12 engine with up to 512 hp (382 kW) for Tier 4 Final/EU Stage IV near-zero emissions standards. The 6 cylinder, 12 liter engine is purpose-designed with a very compact envelope and over 30 percent higher power to weight ratio than the class average for engines with a similar power range. The QSG12 is suitable for large tractors, combine harvesters and specialist equipment.
The QSG12 sets a new benchmark for heavy-duty engines with its ability to outperform any comparable engine, yet provides a smaller, lighter and simpler engine package to install. The QSG12 takes a unique approach to meeting Tier 4 Final/Stage IV without the use of EGR, using a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and SCR only.
